drabble #1
Drabble, soriku, canon verse
Set post kh3
“So what?” Riku mumbled around a bite of strawberry, fingers pinching the stem to twist it free. He lounged indulgently on the rough picnic blanket Sora had found stuffed in a treasure chest in the mystical tower, one arm folded under his head and legs crooked at the knee. The trees in Corona were always lush and vibrant, the sun dappling Riku’s skin in shy kisses.
“So,” Sora mumbled, tearing his gaze from Riku’s throat as he swallowed to take a bite of cupcake. It was a gift from Rapunzel, after she’d grasped Riku’s hands in excitement and told him all about what Sora had done. It’d been terribly humbling, hearing about his antics told in gushing excitement, and instead of dismissing it as Riku used to, he’d encouraged it, asking more details, eyes glittering with mirth as Sora grew more and more red. “She was exaggerating. Rapunzel can do crazy things with her hair! She fought plenty of heartless on her own.”
“Yeah?” Riku asked, licking his lips free of berry juice and glancing at Sora from the corner of his eye. His pale lashes jealousy caged his green eyes from view, and Sora fumbled with his cupcake, missing his intended next bite to accidentally ram the thing into his nose. Riku blinked then snorted with laughter, curling in. Sora flushed, discreetly trying to get icing out of his nose. “With a klutz like you? I bet!”
“Hey!” Sora protested weakly. Riku laughing was too rare and sweet though, and Sora was willing to do just about anything to make his cheeks pink with amusement. Intending to show some photos he’d taken of Rapunzel swinging enemies around with her hair, Sora tried to pull up his gallery but opened his camera instead. Riku was framed perfectly in shot, half sitting up as he reached for more fruit. He was still laughing softly, the tail end of his mirth, and the sun made his hair glow where it broke through the leaves.
Sora took a picture.
And promptly forgot the exceedingly loud shutter sound that followed. Riku froze, then looked dead at the camera.
“Did you just take a picture?” Riku demanded, brows raising.
“N-no,” Sora stuttered.
“Sora,” Riku deadpanned, both of them perfectly aware that Sora couldn’t lie to him.
“I didn’t!” Sora insisted.
Riku hummed, sitting straight and leaning forward with one hand on the blanket between them, except the blanket was more like the size of a towel and it felt like it was only getting smaller to Sora as Riku crept closer. “If you didn’t,” Riku began slowly, and Sora swallowed nervously as Riku inched even closer and wow his eyelashes are like, stupid long what the heck, “then you won’t mind if I take a peek?”
Sora blinked and quick as a flash Riku’s hand lashed out, plucking Sora’s phone seamlessly from his lax grasp. “Hey!”
He must’ve tensed,or maybe Riku just knew him that well, but Riku grinned, suddenly incredibly boyish looking with excitement as he leapt from the blanket, Sora scrambling after him like a cat on hardwood floor. “Riku no!”
Riku took off, phone in hand, and Sora was hot on his heels, except Riku had shot up like a beansprout and had a whole head on Sora. The giant tree they’d been resting under was decidedly too big as Sora chased Riku around it. “Riku nooooo! Don’t look!”
He could see Riku bringing the phone in front of him, see him move to unlock it, and Sora felt the nerves of facing Xehanort down all over again. With a burst of speed, Sora launched himself at Riku, who to his credit took the weight of a rowdy teen boy remarkably well.
“Sora!” Riku gasped, stumbling forward as Sora collided onto him. Rather than reasonably settle on the ground, Sora stayed stuck to him, reaching around Riku’s chest to grapple for the phone. “No way!” Riku stretched his arm straight up.
“Cheating!” Sora accused, wiggling around to face Riku and hop up, straining to reach the phone.
“Naturally gifted,” Riku smirked down.
Naturally, huh? Alright, Sora thought, two can play it that way. Using his natural bouncing ability, Sora jumped up, grabbed Riku around the neck and wrapped his legs around his waist, cheering as he snatched the phone from Riku’s hand when he faltered.
He immediately shoved the phone into his pocket and zipped it up, grinning down at Riku from his perch. “Naturally gifted,” Sora said, knowing he had a particularly shit eating grin.
“Yeah,” Riku mumbled, face a striking shade of red. Sora squeezed his neck as he let go of Riku’s waist, clambering down him like a tree. He was pretty proud of himself, thinking outside the box as was his forte. He landed with a huff and preened, waiting for the commentary. When no sarcastic comment came, Sora frowned, peering up at Riku who’d ducked his head. That was no use, given that Sora was shorter than him.
“Riku?”
“Uhm!” Riku said too loudly, jerking his head up and walking a wide berth around Sora, startling him. “Food! Before the animals eat it. We should… go back to it. To the food. Yeah.”
“Sure,” Sora said, watching him in confusion. Still, Riku had a point. He bounced after him and threaded his arm through Riku’s when he caught up, dragging him back to the blanket with unabashed excitement. The cupcake tasted even sweeter with Riku’s flushed pink face in view.
