pieces of you

There's a lot of ongoing work I can't share at the moment, so here's a short drabble.

pieces of you

Riku’s fingers trembled as they hovered over the hardwood grain. He’d only been gone a few minutes, but the pounding of his heart was white noise in his ears. How long? How much time had he spent in the kitchen? How long did it take, from leaving his room in the castle, to going down the hall, the stairs, across the wing, to the kitchens, and back—

How long had he left his room empty?

His room had been impersonal and well kept. Either magic or someone had made sure to whisk away any hint of dirt, or maybe not enough time had passed since the castle had returned from oblivion for any dirt to settle, but Riku’s new room had been bare as if waiting to be personalized.

All he’d done though was clutter the desk with his logs and notes and books, bedsheets rumpled and unmade and a basket of laundry at the foot that he never bothered to put away as he cycled through his clothes. He’d made no other mark, nothing to say it was Riku, because none of this was his. This wasn’t him.

Maybe he’d seen Riku leave his room. Maybe he’d been watching, maybe he’d even been there with Riku. His eyes stung at the thought.

Fine, thin and painstakingly carved pale lines revealed the fiber of his wooden desk, and with a gasping sob, Riku’s fingers alighted on the words.

I’ll see you soon.

He didn’t need a name or signature to know who it was from. There was only one person Riku was waiting to see. His hand curled into a fist over it, and Riku bowed slowly, until his forehead touched the words, squeezing his eyes shut as he felt the disturbed wood empress itself into his skin.
